Day 1: Windhoek

Crossing the Namibian desert on horseback is a lifelong dream….this is the oldest and most fascinating desert in the world, dating back 80 million years. The Namib Desert is located on the coastal part of western Namibia, with a small portion also situated in Angola and the Republic of South Africa. Much of the Namib territory is included in protected natural areas, the most important of which is the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest national park in Africa. The name “Namib” (from which “Namibia” is derived) comes from the language of the Nama people who inhabit the region and means “vast place,” indeed it covers an area of about 55,000 km². The southern Namib (between Luderitz and the Kuiseb River) consists of a belt of some of the highest and most spectacular dunes in the world, often characterized by very intense colors, ranging from pink to orange. The tourist destination of Sossusvlei is particularly well-known, where Dune 45 (often referred to as “the most photographed in the world”) and Big Daddy, the tallest in the world (305 meters), are located.

We will set off on horseback from the inland areas of Windhoek to the coasts of Swakopmund, from rolling hills to rocky desert and sandy shores. A 250-mile adventure in the company of excellent horses and guides that will lead you to discover the most remote and spectacular parts of Namibia.

ITALY/WINDHOEK (-/-/D)
Pick-up at Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek (WDH) and transfer to River Crossing Lodge where we will meet the rest of the group. During dinner, the trip will be explained.

Day 2: Sossusvlei

WINDHOEK / SOSSUSVLEI (B/L/D)
Transfer to the location where the horses are waiting for us (about 4 hours) and the beginning of the Namibian Desert with a spectacular view of the Naukluft mountains. In the afternoon, the excursion will take us through the Sossusvlei area with its vast sand dunes, some reaching up to 300 meters. Return to the camp for a traditional dinner of local dishes.

Day 3: Sossusvlei

SOSSUSVLEI / NAUKLUFT (B/L/D)
Today marks the start of our adventure on horseback through oases and sand. The camp will be set up between the hills before the majestic Naukluft mountains, and the nearby waterholes often attract many zebras, kudus, and oryx at night.

Day 4: Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park

B/L/D)
Our adventure in the pristine nature continues with long gallops every time the valleys open up. The camp will be set up near an isolated farm.

Day 5: Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park

B/L/D)
We will cross some dunes with reddish sand before entering a canyon where we will stop in the shade for lunch. As we continue, by the end of the day, we might spot the Kuiseb River in the distance.

Day 6: Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park

B/L/D)
We will head towards the riverbed, where the terrain becomes quite technical at times. The camp will be set up above the river, near a tangle of trees.

Day 7: Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park

B/L/D)
On horseback towards Ganab, a watering point for mountain zebras, oryx, ostriches, and even desert giraffes, which we may have the chance to spot and perhaps even approach with a little luck. Overnight at the camp.

Day 8: Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park

B/L/D)
Another adventure-filled day heading towards the Hotsas watering point, crossing the Tinkas and Tumas valleys, which become increasingly sparse in vegetation as we approach the coast. This is the area where fog starts to appear, with its constant humidity being five times greater than the humidity from rainfall.

Day 9: Swakopmund

B/L/D)
Today, we will pass from an arid landscape into the true desert, where we will see the characteristic ghostly trees, the Welwitschia Mirabilis. This is a very ancient place, full of fascination but also great solitude. Passing through the Moon Valley, we will arrive at our camp near the Swakop River.

Day 10: Swakopmund

SWAKOPMUND (B/L/D)
We will finally reach the Atlantic Ocean and make our first contact with civilization after many days. We will ride on the beach at Swakopmund before relaxing for our last dinner and enjoying a restful night at the lodge.

Day 11:

SWAKOPMUND/WINDHOEK (B/-/-)
Breakfast and transfer to Windhoek (about 4 hours). Please schedule a return flight no earlier than 3:00 PM. For those who wish to avoid the transfer by road, we recommend a flight from Walvis Bay.
For those who wish to extend their stay by a few days, we can suggest some activities in Swakopmund (dolphin cruise, sandboarding, skydiving, desert quad tours), or a visit to Etosha National Park.

Note: The itinerary above is indicative and may be subject to changes due to weather conditions or circumstances beyond our control.
Non-riders can also participate and can use the jeeps for their photographic safaris.
