Day 1: Yosemite Area

An exclusive departure date to explore the legendary yosemite park on horseback!
this park is one of the most famous and most visited destinations in the world, declared a national park in 1890.
the park offers a spectacular landscape of valleys, mountains, and green plains, and it is famous for its waterfalls, centuries-old sequoia trees, and granite cliffs.
it covers an area of over 760,000 hectares stretching to the western slopes of the sierra nevada. every year it is visited by more than 3.5 million people, who usually only explore the 7 miles of yosemite valley. thanks to our horses, we will be able to visit much more, far from tourist areas, to experience true untouched nature:
• mono pass, with an incredible view of mountains and valleys
• gold creek and mono creek, scenic canyons
• silver pass, with breathtaking views
• lake mc gee
• virginia and purple lakes
• deer creek
• gladys lake
• thousand island lake
• lyell fork, a canyon with sub-alpine vegetation

rock creek – mono creek (-/l/d)
Meeting point at rock creek pack station at 7:00 am (arrival the evening before is recommended at mammoth yosemite airport (mmh), with overnight at tom’s place or rock creek camping).
meeting with the horses and departure, following the route toward mono pass and climbing to mount starr at 12,000 feet. we will enjoy an incredible view of the surrounding mountains and valleys dotted with mountain lakes. after crossing the pass, we will descend on the other side, passing through gold creek and mono creek before camping at the base of a canyon for the night.


Day 2: Yosemite Area

silver pass (b/l/d)
we will ride through canyons, pine forests, and flower-filled meadows, then head north along the pacific trail to silver pass. camp will be set in a hidden clearing with an amazing view.


Day 3: Yosemite Area

horse heaven (b/l/d)
we continue north on the trail overlooking mount ritter and banner peak and entering yosemite. we will pass lone indian basin and 5 lakes, fish creek bridge to reach horse heaven, where we will camp.


Day 4: Yosemite Area

layover (b/l/d)
a day of rest and relaxation with the option to fish or walk in the surrounding nature. for those interested, there’s a horseback excursion to mcgee pass.


Day 5: Yosemite Area

deer creek (b/l/d)
we will ride along the mammoth peaks. we’ll pass the beautiful virginia and purple lakes and head into the dense forest until we reach the deer creek campsite.


Day 6: Yosemite Area

gladys lake (b/l/d)
today we descend to a lower altitude, passing by devil’s postpile national monument with its incredible rock formations. we’ll cross the san joaquin river, pass minaret creek and lake johnson. after about another hour on horseback, we will reach our camping spot at gladys lake.


Day 7: Yosemite Area

thousand island lake (b/l/d)
a spectacular day passing by lake rosalie and shadow lake. we will camp on the northwest shore of thousand island lake.


Day 8: Yosemite Area

lyell fork canyon (b/l/d)
we will cross island pass and exit on the eastern side of the sierra and one of the entrances to yosemite park. superb view of mount lyell and its glacier. we will camp at lyell fork canyon.


Day 9: Yosemite Area

lyell fork canyon (b/l/d)
we will explore the yosemite area called vogelsang: ireland and evelyn lakes in this alpine zone.


Day 10:

toulomne (b/-/-)
final day on horseback, ending in one of the most beautiful plains overlooking the sierra. transfer back to rock creek pack station, arrival between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm.

pace: 4-6 hours per day on horseback. the pace is slow, mostly walking due to the pack animals accompanying the trek
what to bring: luggage weight limit per person is 14 kg (30 lbs), excess may incur a local charge of 3 to 10 usd. a soft bag is required and we recommend separating items in plastic bags. do not forget to label your bag. alcohol can be brought (transfer to plastic bottles). layered and waterproof clothing; protective helmet, sleeping bag, inflatable mat, plastic camping mug, swiss army knife, headlamp, towel, soap, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, swimsuit, first aid kit/medications, spare batteries, solar power bank
type: mobile tent camps with horses and pack mules

accommodation:
overnight stays are in mobile camps set up each evening. tents of various types and sizes are available. there are no showers, but camps will always be near rivers and lakes; soap use is prohibited near water sources, and wash basins are provided upon request. there are no bathrooms, but a pit will be dug each evening. no electricity, only flashlights and candles. varied cooking with fresh produce, and every morning you will prepare your own packed lunch as preferred.
