Day 1: Faial Island

We present the Azores… a group of nine lush volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 1400 km off the coast of Portugal: São Miguel, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores, Graciosa, Corvo, and Santa Maria… discovering the Azores on horseback is possible… The wonderful climate year-round has created a paradise for the proliferation of wild flora and one of the best places in the world for dolphin and whale watching. The Azores, famous for the homonymous anticyclone that influences the weather of all Europe, are lush and wild, with a unique beauty for those who love nature holidays. With this proposal, on the back of beautiful Lusitano horses, we will discover the island of Faial in an 8-day circular route around the island. The island is also called Ilha Azul, “the blue island,” by poet Raul Brandão, due to the large number of hydrangeas present on the island that fill the eyes with color during the warmer seasons; not to forget the impressive Caldeira, the mouth of the highest volcano on the island, and Capelinhos, which emerged from the sea only a few decades ago and constitutes the youngest land in Europe.

ITALY / FAIAL (-/-/D)
Pick-up at Horta Airport (HOR) and transfer to a typical lodge with local architecture. Free time for relaxation. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Faial Island

FAIAL (B/L/D)
First half-day ride towards the coast to discover the beautiful cliffs and green pastures. Return along the coast for a refreshing lunch break and, if weather permits, we can swim. We will leave the horses sheltered to await us the next day and return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Faial Island

FAIAL (B/L/D)
We reach the horses and begin our day riding along the coast, learning about the earthquake that destroyed several villages and the lighthouse in 1998. Stop for a picnic lunch and, in the afternoon, we will reach the city of Horta by vehicle for a meeting with a team of marine biologists with whom we will go, aboard a zodiac, into the open sea to discover the largest mammals on earth (if sea conditions or the season do not allow the activity, there will be time to explore the colorful and cosmopolitan city). Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Faial Island

FAIAL (B/L/D)
Today will be a long day in the saddle, discovering one of Faial's beauties: the crater, the caldeira. Located at an altitude of 1000 meters exactly in the center of the island, the view that awaits you is truly magnificent, a crater 400 meters deep and 2.5 km wide (possibility at the end of the holiday to extend the stay to descend into the crater). Lunch break with a picnic and, in the afternoon, we will ride through the solitary mountains dotted only by a few farms. We will arrive at Jungle Camp to leave the horses and, by vehicle, return to the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 5: Faial Island

FAIAL (B/L/D)
In the saddle through the Capelo Natural Park before heading towards Cabeço Verde. From above, we can admire spectacular views of Praia do Norte, Cabeço do Fogo, Morro do Castelo Branco, and the Capelinhos Volcano. The descent will allow us to cross the unique vineyards of the island of Faial, a wine-growing area that, thanks to the ashes from the last eruption and the special way of cultivating grapes, has unique characteristics in the archipelago. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 6: Faial Island

FAIAL (B/L/D)
Today we will cross mystical landscapes, where once vineyards were cultivated and where now, following the ash deposited by the eruption of the volcano in the distant 1950s, vegetation has taken over after the area was abandoned by its inhabitants. We will gallop along the coast and then descend along the sheer cliffs to reach the Capelinhos volcano, which last erupted in 1957. The surrounding landscape is desert-like, and the village of the old whale hunters is still buried under the ash of the volcano. Picnic lunch and visit to the modern seismic monitoring center hidden beneath the old unused lighthouse. We will leave the horses at Jungle Camp and return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Faial Island

FAIAL (B/L/D)
We have arrived at the last day of discovering Faial and from Jungle Camp we will return towards the base. We are awaited by small lava stone houses, well-kept gardens, and a wild sea. We cross the island from the arid south to the green north. Magnificent views of terraced pastures leading to the blue ocean along which we will gallop. We will arrive at the highest village on the island – Ribeira Funda, located directly above a 300-meter-deep canyon. Picnic lunch with a view of the majestic canyon and the ocean. Return to the lodge in the afternoon for the last farewell dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8:

FAIAL (B/-/-)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport or the possibility to extend the stay.

Note: The above itinerary is indicative and may be subject to changes due to weather conditions or circumstances beyond our control. It is possible to extend the stay to deepen whale watching, visit the nearby island of Pico, swim with dolphins, or descend into the extinct volcano crater. A shorter version of the horseback itinerary can be requested to include different excursions.
