Day 1: Castiglione della Pescaia

CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA (-/-/D)
For nature and horse lovers, exploring Tuscany on horseback is a must! This land boasts a rich equestrian tradition, especially rooted in its native Maremmano horse. This breed dates back to Etruscan times, with early horse populations documented along the Tyrrhenian coast.
The Maremmano likely originated from these populations, later refined over centuries through selective breeding for battlefield utility. Raised traditionally in the wild under challenging conditions, these horses are hardy, frugal, versatile, and reliable—having served butteri (Tuscan cowboys) for livestock herding and commonly used in trekking. They’ll be your faithful companion as you discover the lush landscape and rich history of this region, complemented by great local cuisine and wine.
During our stay, we’ll be based in Castiglione della Pescaia (Province of Grosseto), a seaside town with rich natural surroundings. This area is part of Maremma and includes part of the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, a notable wetland habitat.

Please arrive independently in time for dinner. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2:

CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA (B/L/D)
Self-transfer to the stables in the morning. Set off on a trek through Mediterranean scrub to the Hermitage of San Guglielmo, the town’s patron saint. This Romanesque church features an 18th-century altar and is nestled in nature, reflecting the story of San Guglielmo, a noble warrior who converted to Christianity after a dissolute youth. Picnic along the route, then return in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 3:

CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA (B/L/D)
We head north to Rocchette, a charming beach decorated with fine sandy shores and smooth rock cliffs. The sea shimmers in shades from green to deep blue. Picnic by the sea, then return to the stables in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Note (May to September):
During summer months, horseback beach access is restricted. Instead, we’ll enjoy a full-day ride to Isola Clodia, at the northern edge of the Diaccia Botrona marsh. This elevated landform used to be an island in Prile Lake and served as an Etruscan anchorage; Clodius built his villa here in the 1st century BC. Colors in the marsh are at their most vibrant in the morning. We’ll trot along the beach, picnic en route, return to the stables at day’s end, and enjoy dinner before returning to the hotel.
